Kevin Millecam of Web Wise Solutions has a great introductory article in the Userpoints module.

The article details how one of his clients, Altiris, uses userpoints as a community participation tool, and a reward program program complete with a catalog.

This is a great use case for userpoints, and one that is unconventional too.
